How to save your skin and hair from the Holi color nightmare

Holi brings with it the amazing opportunity to enjoy with family and friends. Known as the festival of colour and joy, it marks the arrival of spring and signals new beginnings and that is the reason why it is celebrate with so much enthusiasm and cheer. On this day people get together with family, friends and relatives etc. and play Holi by throwing colours on each other.

Dry colour powder along with water, gulaal and pichkari is used to smear colours on your loved ones. All these activities amounts to fun but if the right precaution is not take it can soon turn out to be a nightmare for your skin and hair. Hence, taking proper care of your skin is hair is very important if you don’t want to deal with the damage afterwards. Look at the following tips and make sure that you are safe from any skin or hair problem.

1.Wear Proper Clothes

Since Holi comes as the perfect occasion to indulge in lots of colourful revelry, we tend to wear skimpy clothes so as to save them from getting stained and the washing that ensues afterwards. However if you want to protect your skin from getting spoiled it is advised to wear clothes that offers maximum coverage. Also opt for cotton as it helps the skin breathe and keep it airy. If you are playing Holi outdoors don’t forget to apply plenty of sunscreen all over your body especially on exposed body parts such as face and arms.

2. Buy only organic colours

Inorganic colours have plenty of harmful chemicals in which can result in various skin allergies. Always make sure that the colour you are buying is safe and organic to have a safe and fun Holi.

3. Use oil on skin and hair before playing Holi

Skin specialist advise applying a mixture of olive oil, castor oil and Moroccan oil etc. on your hair and skin to keep the colours from penetrating. Also, try to wash the colours off immediately so that it the harmful chemicals don’t penetrate under your skin. Tie your hair in a bun or ponytail to avoid damage from dust and colour.

4. Replace your regular soap with mild cleanser

Getting colours off your skin can take some time but don’t use harsh soap to wash off the colours. Instead use some cleanser that is mild on the skin as soap can add to skin dryness increasing the problem.

5. Avoid wearing contact lens

Wearing eye lenses while playing Holi is one of the common mistakes committed by many. Avoid wearing contact lenses because they cannot protect your eyes. You can wear shades or glasses if you simply cannot do without them but be careful so as not to get your eyes hurt while applying to the face.

6. Use cold water to wash off the colours

Once you are done playing Holi use cold water to wash the colours off your body as hot water can cause the colors to stick to your skin/hair thus exacerbating the problems. Also, if you need to scrub your face after you are done playing try using natural face packs to get maximum results.

7. Keep Yourself Hydrated

Drink plenty of liquids (water, juice and glucose etc.) to keep yourself hydrated to avoid fatigue and keep yourself energized. Dehydration results in dry skin which will cause the colours to penetrate deep into your skin and keeping yourself hydrated is the key to keep your skin safe and protected.

8. Apply Plenty of Moisturizers

Once you are done cleaning yourself apply plenty of moisturizer to keep it soft and supple. Also, do not opt for any parlour treatment such as facial and scrubbing as it may result in some skin problems.
